Careers With Animals

Beginning a career with animals requires a love for animals. Most veterinarians developed a passion for animals at a very early age. This passion may include having a fond interest for family pets, strays, and wild animals. Those who want a career with animals have several options.

The most humanitarian career with animals is a veterinarian. Veterinarians are pet doctors, and they devote their life to caring for family pets. However, the job of a vet is not only to provide medical care for animals, they also serve as a comforter. When many pet owners bring their animals to the vet they are scared and nervous. Veterinarians have an amazing way of providing support and reassurance to pet owners.

This career with animals is very competitive. Those who have hopes of becoming a veterinarian must receive ample training and perform well in school. Training as a vet should begin prior to completing a degree program. Future veterinarians should volunteer with SPCA, animal hospitals, or farms. Volunteer work will provide experience working with animals, which looks great on a college application.

Veterinarians generally study a pre-veterinary program in college. Other programs of study include biology, chemistry, or other sciences. Although there are 27 accredited veterinarian schools, admittance is highly competitive. Thus, students must obtain high grades. High grade point averages increase the chances of getting accepted into a top school. Prior to becoming a veterinarian, students must complete veterinarian school and pass the Veterinary Licensing Exam.

Additional careers with animals include trainer and zoologist. Trainers are great for teaching a pet to obey commands, and for directing show animals in circuses or at amusement parks. Training an animal requires great skills. Trainers must be able to gain an animals trust and respect. Zoologists are individuals employed by a zoo and typically work as a zookeeper.
